Holiday Gift Fair - NOTE NEW DATES - Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22, 2009

Do you ever wonder if there is something you can do to help break the cycle of poverty in the developing world? One way you can have an impact is through purchasing "fair trade" items from companies such as Trade as One, which sells beautiful handmade items by women and men in developing countries. On Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22, we will host our 2nd annual holiday gift fair in partnership with Trade as One. Consider volunteering your time as well as doing some shopping of your own!

From Trade as One's website: “Fair trade allows you to give unique, high-quality gifts to family and friends — while giving hope and income to the poor.”  To learn more about Trade as One, please visit http://www.tradeasone.com/.

Available volunteer positions include:
  • Cashiers
  • Cashier assistants

Lunch with "Horn of Africa Mission" Leader, Aychiluhm Beyene - This Sunday

Horn of Africa Mission (HOAM) is one of our church's African ministry partners. In the first six years of its ministry, Horn of Africa Mission became the catalytic force behind launching thousands of new churches in one of the most difficult regions on earth. On October 18, HOAM leader, Aychiluhm Beyene, will be introduced during both services in Mountain View. You are invited to stay for lunch after the 10:30 a.m. service to hear more from Ayche about reaching the unreached in the Horn of Africa. To learn more about HOAM or about Ayche's visit, contact Kathy Welsh, kathyhw@earthlink.net.

"Bookshelf for Every Child" Project - Saturday, October 24, 2009 – 1:00-4:00 p.m.

You are invited to join ODCMV in partnership with Reach Potential to bless low income Kindergarten students at Castro Elementary School with encouragement in learning to read and to love reading for a lifetime by providing them with their very own bookshelf and starter set of books! Volunteer opportunities for this project include:

  • Planning fun activities for the children
  • Sharing your decorating ideas with the children for the bookshelves. We need a creative person who will coordinate the colors and styles of the art materials with the bookshelf design.
Join us Saturday, October 24 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Castro School to assist children in decorating their own bookshelf or support a workshop for parents on how to help their children learn to read. Sign up at the information table on Sunday or contact Trina Weller, kweller@sbcglobal.net.

Castro School Book Drive - LAST SUNDAY TO DONATE!

In conjunction with the “Bookshelf for Every Child” project, we will be collecting new and gently used kindergarten and first grade reading level books. The goal is to gather enough books to fill the 40 bookshelves that we will provide for and decorate with the children on October 24!  Look for the green donation tub in the back of Fellowship Hall on Sundays, through October 18. Questions? Contact Trina Weller, kweller@sbcglobal.net.

Dinners for Eight are Here - Sign Up This Sunday

Here's a great opportunity to get to know others in our church beyond the Sunday morning greetings!  On various evenings this month, several people are opening their homes for dinner and conversation.  Stop by the "Dinners for 8" table this Sunday after services and sign up to attend a dinner that's convenient for you.  Your host(ess) will contact you with more details and arrange what you can contribute to the meal!  For questions, contact Kimberley Moran, 650.968.3606, itsmek2m@sbcglobal.net.

Mothers Together Mountain View - Thursdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Mothers Together is a unique community.  We come together to receive support, to learn, and to grow.  At Mothers Together, we believe deeply in the importance of relating to you as God's beloved daughter - the foundation of who you are.  Each month, September through May, we will spend time together in small groups as well as in one large group in Fellowship Hall at Open Door Church Mountain View.

Small Group Bible Study
1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Each meeting will include teaching, small group discussion, and time for intentional connection and prayer.  Join us in October and November as we study the book, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, by Joanna Weaver.  The book will be available for purchase but is not required to participate.

All Togethers
4th and 5th Thursdays of each month. These mornings include guest speakers as well as time for fellowship and discussions with other moms on topics of faith, motherhood, and personal growth.  On October 24 we will welcome Jim Candy, MPPC's Family Life Pastor, who will share his thoughts on the topic:  "Will the Next Generation Follow God?"

The Children's Program, which is supported by the church and through donations, welcomes children from 3 months through Kindergarten. Infants are welcome to stay with mom.

Our prayer is for Mothers Together to be hallowed ground - a place during the week where there are no barriers to receiving and feeling God's love and grace ... AND the love and grace from each other. Please come as you are - no matter what stage you're in. We look forward to welcoming you and to hearing how God is working in your life.

For questions, contact Lynn Duisenberg, lynn@duisenberg.com or Angelyn Knab, aknab@mppc.org.

Operation Christmas Child - Collection Sundays, November 15 and 22

By taking an ordinary shoe box, filling it with toys and other presents, you have a special gift for a child in need of joy and hope.  Personally pack a shoe box for a child aged 2-4 years, 5-9 years, or 10-14 years that will be distributed all over the world in areas of poverty, war, disease, and natural disaster.  Organized and promoted by the Samaritan Purse organization, a book about the Gospel will be supplied in each shoe box before distribution.

Collection dates at Open Door Church Mountain View:  Sunday, November 15 and Sunday, November 22.

Operation Christmas Child is a great mission project that you can do with family, small groups, or individually.  Brochures will be available later this month.  If you have any questions, please contact June Darmanian, 650.960.3601, darmanian@earthlink.net.
